I stayed here while attending the Calif. Assoc. of Museums conf. in late July '02. A/C worked fine; Denny's next door; some snack foods available at Sacramento station waiting room. Star rating is for convenience to station and Cal Museum. 10-15 min. walk to nearest Sacramento LRT station (other side of mall).

When visiting Sacramento's Old Town, we like staying at the Vagabond Inn, whether coming by train or car. The Inn is a short walk to the Amtrak Station, The California State Railroad Museum and historic, picturesque Old Town. It is very clean, mostly non-smoking, with fair rates. Free continental breakfast.

Directly across (a very busy) I Street from the Amtrak depot, at Third Street (free shuttle available & recommended if you don't want to walk 'round, call them). One short block (thru adj. parking structure under Fwy) to CSRM. Nice continental breakfast incl. Refer & coffee-maker in-room. Stayed there for opening of Disney exhibit at CSRM. I like this place. Also, West End Bar & Grill (2nd & I) highly recommended for (LD) food & svc.

````This hotel is located just across the street from the Union Pacific (ex Southern Pacific) mainline. If you can get a room on the north side on the second or third floor, you can watch the trains go by out your front window. If you go through the parking stucture on the west side of the hotel you come out right in the middle of Old Sacramento. There are several great places to watch or photograph trains nearby. I have visited this hotel three times. The staff is very nice and the rooms are clean and comfortable. There is a large shopping center just a few blocks away. I highly recommend this hotel.
Just back from a weekend visit to Sacramento and the CSRM. We stayed at the Vagabond and were not disappointed. We got a great internet rate and then got $5.00 more off using a coupon from the AAA Tour Book. They are about half way through a major renovation. All single bed (King) rooms are done and most two bed rooms are about half-done. Staff was very helpful and pleasant. Free internet access in lobby. Denny's next door with pretty good food and some great senior discounts. Fresh baked cookies on arrival at the hotel. Easy walk to Museum and Old Town. Our room had a refrigerator and a microwave. TV was getting terrible reception during a change over in systems but it was fixed quickly. When we had a small plumbing problem the Vagabond Maintenence Chief who happened to be staying in the hotel filled in for the regular guy who was on a day off! It sounds like this is an up and coming, well managed company.
We stayed here in mid-February when we were in SAC for a quick visit to the California State Railroad Museum and Old Town. The location is great and the hotel is about half-way through an extensive remodel. Our room still had the old furniture but had new paint, new carpet and a small refigerator and a microwave. The AAA rate was excellent and we got an additional $5.00 per night off with a coupon in the AAA book. The rate included a nice breakfast with cook yourelf waffles. There is also a Denny's next door which has pretty good food and an enthusiastic staff. I'd highly recommend this property! (Note: This is a repeat of an earlier posting that never made it online.)
