My girlfriend and I stayed here 2 winters ago. It's really a nice place, good rooms, it has train art/photos all through it. In the morning, our host Mike came up with breakfast snacks and tea. It was really a cool place. The tunnel is right next to the hotel with a bridge so you can get right over the trains and have a most excellent view of the tunnel. The ice formations at the smaller tunnel mouth that year were just amazing. The town's own museum, which is a five-minute walk away as I recall, has a lot of artifacts and photos from the steam era and a really nice video presentation too. We got to talk with a fellow there that actually worked during the steam era there. Since no-one else was around at that time of year he was like our personal tour guide!! Couldn't beat it! We're going back this February (2003) just after valentines day. There are other great sites close by like the canal/portage railroad museum, and Altoona Railroader's Museum. Too much to take in in just one weekend...
Rating : 5 star. A Railfan's Delight , 16-Apr-2003

The Tunnel Inn is one of the best railfan destinations in the county. From fifteen to twenty-five trains a day pass near the Inn. They can be enjoyed from the Inn’s deck or from two bridges that cross over the rails. One bridge is within a few feet from the Inn while the other is approximately a quarter of a mile distant. The Gallitzin tunnels are within forty to fifty yards from the Inn. The rooms are spotless and beautifully decorated. The innkeeper, Mike Kraynyak, has a great sense of humor and knows all of the best railfan spots in the area. Breakfast is always on time and Mike gives you a few snacks that can be eaten with breakfast on taken with you for the day. The Inn is a great place to stay.

Defently Recommend The Tunnel Inn to any railfan who is in the Altoona Area. Very Comfortable Rooms - I've stayed in 3 of the 5 rooms so far. Big Comfy Beds, Cable TV, and A/C for those hot summer days by the tracks. Most of the trains pass by in Run-8 struggling to get over the mountain. It's get's loud at times, but that's what we railfans look for. The owner Mike K. is one of the nicest people I've met, and always makes you stay as enjoyable as possible. Breakfast is waiting at your door in the morning at whatever time you wish. Rear Deck overlooks the tracks. Nice PRR Art is located throughout the Inn. 5 Stars for the Tunnel Inn.

A must-stay for train-watching in the Altoona area. I made my choice based on these reviews -- and The Tunnel Inn is absolutely the cleanest B&B I've ever stayed at -- and innkeeper Mike Kraynyak bends over backwards to make you feel at home. And what a set of trains he has! Watching the constant flow of RR traffic 30 feet away off the deck and listening to RR historian and enthusiast Mike tell stories is worth the price alone! Air conditioning and in-room TVs make it better than any other railfan lodging in the area. And having breakfast delivered to my door ON TIME was special -- so were the warm muffins and hot coffee -- and so was the box of
